Commission Calculator for Car Sales
Car deals pay on gross profit, not sale price. Enter the front-end gross, your dealership's pack, and your percentage — this shows what the deal is actually worth to you.
What this deal pays
If commission on (gross − pack) falls below the mini, you're paid the mini flat amount instead.
How car sales commissions work
Most dealerships pay salespeople 20–30% of the front-end gross profit — the difference between what the car sells for and what the dealership has in it — not a percentage of the sticker price. Three terms decide what you actually earn:
- Pack — a fixed amount ($400–$800 typically) the dealership subtracts from the gross before your percentage applies, to cover lot costs. A $2,400 gross with a $600 pack pays commission on $1,800.
- Mini — the flat minimum you're paid when a deal has little or no front-end gross ($100–$300 is common). Skinny deals and heavily-discounted units usually pay minis.
- Back-end — finance and insurance profit (warranties, GAP, rate spread) usually pays the F&I manager, though some pay plans give the salesperson a small back-end slice or a flat bonus for turning the customer over to F&I.
Volume bonuses change everything
Per-unit bonuses often matter more than any single deal: many plans step up at 10, 15, and 20 units per month ($50–$100 extra per unit, sometimes retroactive to unit one). That's why a month-end deal that pays a mini can still be worth hundreds — it might tip you into the next unit bracket. If your plan is retroactive, tracking your unit count mid-month is the single highest-value habit in this job.
Keep a deal log the house can't argue with
Commission disputes at the sales tower are usually about memory, not math. Logging every deal — gross, pack, mini, spiffs — in the Controlla app when it happens gives you your own number to compare against the commission sheet on payday.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage do car salesmen make per car?
Typically 20–30% of the front-end gross profit after the dealer pack is subtracted — not a percentage of the sale price. On $1,800 of commissionable gross at 25%, that's $450.
What is a 'pack' in car sales?
A fixed amount (often $400–$800) the dealership deducts from a deal's gross profit before calculating your commission, meant to cover overhead on the car.
What is a mini deal?
A deal with too little gross profit to pay meaningful commission, so the dealership pays a flat minimum instead — commonly $100–$300.
Do car salesmen make money on financing?
Usually the F&I office keeps back-end profit, but many pay plans give salespeople a flat bonus or small percentage when their customer finances or buys products in F&I.
